We all have to start somewhere! My goal of growing succulents started with a Pinterest board for biophilic design and decorating. As humans we tend to constantly want to be on the path towards balance and happiness, and indoor plants were an appealing part of that to me. I also enjoy water features, but one thing at a time, because I have a yellow thumb. It all started with a pin of this plant:

It was like a new type of bamboo and I was going to start it from seed. So I ordered it from Etsy, but it came from eBay?
That was odd. Different names of the sellers too, and the seed was marked expired when it got in February. When I reached out to the seller after the seeds didn’t germinate I called her by the name of the eBay seller she ordered them from and it was kinda confusing.

So now that my spiral grass is a no go, what am I left with are these little plants:
- Greenovia
- Sempervivum
- Echeveria
- Lithops (killed them and bought more. Why am I punishing myself?!)
- Assorted other succulents
- Cacti
It’s been fun since then, but there have also been moments like these:

Tripping over a dustpan and this little mystery succulent never recovering after I tried to scoop it up. And losing my red and green echeveria with the spill too. 😅
A few things I have learned this far is:
- Germination seemed better in summer than my originally start in February in Ohio.
- Succulent seeds are TINY so the suggestion of starting with coarser soil may have led to the plants falling through and being hidden.

The soil I originally used was Bonsai Jack. I will pot my mature cacti and succulents with it, but it may have not been the best starting soil for me.
Now I use Gardenera Succulent Soil for my tiny tiny seeds and seedlings. I fully saturate the soil with distilled water and leave barely any in the bottom of the Best priced containers for indoor seedlings (best pricing I could find at the time!). I have to be more careful about the tiny seeds staying too hydrated. I think some of them turned into green mush!
I will do a blog next on how the seedlings are individually doing. Unfortunatley, there were a few I lost to the mail and a few lost to my yellow thumb. 😉
